Friday April 22nd - EVAC Japan Relief Film Series
Please join us for a second film night to raise funds for the survivors of the earthquake/tsunami and nuclear refugees of Fukushima. This time we are screening Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke (1997), an animated epic that depicts the fierce struggle between humans and spirits of the forest as well as internal contradictions within both sides. The film also asks the philosophical question of what it means to live in the midst of antagonism between human civilization and the natural world and suggests the way in which it can end. All donations collected at this event will go to Japan Family Farmers Movement (NOUMINREN).

Geoff Berner & Caroline Mark

https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=154580524614749

Vancouver based klesmer punk rock performer Geoff Berner and the talented beauty Carolyn Mark will be gracing the Old East Studio Stage.

Geoff Berner sings about injustice, olympics, cops, wealth, poverty, luck, love and whiskey. He's quite a performer whose songs are guaranteed to make you think, laugh, lament and tap your toes. http://geoffberner.com/

An evening spent with Geoff Berner’s music is, in the words of the good Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, “a wild combination of menace, madness, and genius… fragmented coherence that wreaks havoc on the mind of any listener.” – Vue Weekly, Edmonton

“Cherish him, cherish him, for there really is no one like him. Fantastic.” — Billy Bragg

Carolyn has more of a alt country rock twang to her performance. Her voice is phenomenal. http://www.carolynmark.com/

"Some things are just meant to be. Birds are born to fly, politicians were born to lie, big fat guys with giant beards were born to ride their machines without getting hassled by the man, and Carolyn Mark was born to make music." - Mint Records

"Carolyn Mark is a headstrong singer with wanderlust and critical-thinking skills that she exercises in songs that never settle for easy answers." - Dave Heaton, PopMatters

"Really there’s no roots-country chanteuse as engaging as Mark, whose well-intentioned banter is capable of making even the sourest puss at a show crack a smile." - Exclaim

Ralf Wiggum & Wonderjunk
Live Music Show
ROCK AND ROLL AT EVAC $5-10 Pay What You Can
Ralf Wiggum is: Philippe Melillo: vocals, guitar, lyrics, music
Jonathan Charette (Lac Estion, Le Roi Poisson): drums, piano
Pierre-Alexandre Poirier Guay (Lac Estion, Le Roi Poisson): guitar
Simon Gosselin: bass

Driven by Philippe Melillo’s tortured mind, Ralf Wiggum shares some resemblance with bands from the post-rock grunge era such as Sonic Youth and The Pixies. Through pop and catchy melodies, the band also shows its love for dissonance, straightforward rhythms and epic moments. Yes, Ralf Wiggum is the name of the band.

And despite The Simpsons' big influence on the artists’ education and a small resemblance between the singer and the naïve little guy, there is no real connection between the two. By choosing to let people give what they want when purchasing an album, Ralf Wiggum shows that fans and the broadcast of its music are what matters the most. http://www.ralfwiggum.com/bio_ang.php

Opening up the night is the incredible local band WONDERJUNK
Glam-Grunge
Members
Miss Annie Thing - Lead Vocals,
Guitar Jordie Bogart - Vocals, Lead Guitar
Raymond P. Tremblay Esq. - Vocals, Bass
J.C. Superstar - Vocals, Drums

Imagine if Hole, L7, 4 Non Blondes and Veruca Salt all donated their ova to David Crosby for fertilization. Add some new life to the grunge killers of the 90's and you've got WonderJunk! There is always a story behind everything. Why not write your own? WonderJunk does exactly that with every song. Lead vocalist Miss Thing takes the listener on a journey through the very centre of their soul with fearless, intense lyrics and a voice to match. With the help of Jordie Bogart's intense shredding on lead guitar, and the pounding rhythm's produced by drummer J.C., and bassist R.P. Tremblay Esq.; WonderJunk will command your attention, keep all the while, and leave you wondering WTF just happened to me?! http://www.wonderjunkmusic.com/

Come on out and have some fun with us!

Kate is unleashing her latest album ‘Repeat Repeat’, an eleven song collection that showcases just how diverse her years of recording have made her. A solid amalgamation of indie-pop, rock, folk and barren singer-songwriter, this album holds something for every listener, a ride that can take you from empowered and joyous to intimately revealing and vulnerable in just one sitting. Connecting to her listeners has always been something that comes naturally to Rogers, and only seems to be getting stronger with each new work she conjures up. Repeat Repeat is clearly no exception to that rule.

Live Music Show
Friday March 29th
Jess Hill, Octoberman & The Abrahmson Singers
8:30pm - $5-10 Pay What You Can

Jess Hill is a unique singer-songwriter risen from the talented denizens of East Vancouver. She is a storyteller whose delicately constructed lyrical worlds captivate, standing firmly with her blues-draped compositions. Her music will smash your heart, pinch you in your sweetest nerves, give pause to the present and sing you to sleep all in one gently fierce moment. Jess invites the audience into her realm, engaging them with a voice like the sound of a well-rosined bow across your heartstrings, telling tales over her skillfully crafted guitar playing. She can pull a room of strangers into her palm, crushing them with stinging emotions and releasing them reborn into the night.

Vancouver native Leah Abramson — formerly of traditional folk bands Dyad, The Crooked Jades, and indie-rockers Octoberman — enlisted her friends in some of Vancouver’s best-loved bands (members of Fond of Tigers, Dan Mangan’s band, Headwater) to play her haunting folk-noir originals as The Abramson Singers.

Writing quirky, catchy and beautiful songs about topics such as truck drivers, old maids, the oil sands and the famous rebel Louis Riel, Leah is a heartbreaking storyteller and singer, hearkening back to simpler times, while embracing present concerns.
